Are Titans good enough to overcome a historic sack struggle?

By John Glennon

Midway through the first quarter of the Titans' win last Sunday, outside linebacker Harold Landry – unblocked by a single Jacksonville lineman – came screaming off the edge and into the Jaguars' backfield.

In his sights was quarterback Mike Glennon, who is – we'll say this kindly – not known for his mobility.

But just as Landry, mouth frothing, looked like he was about to knock Glennon loopy, the statue struck back. The 31 year-old Glennon made a surprise reverse pivot in the pocket, leaving Landry sliding to the turf as he tried to hit the brakes.

Landry's whiff was hardly the only time the Titans turned what looked like a near-sack into an unlikely getaway. Just before the end of the first half, outside linebacker Derick Roberson clung first to Glennon's right arm, then waist and finally left ankle during one pass attempt. Roberson forced Glennon into a grounding penalty, but the quarterback was still standing at the end of the play.

Another miss.

This is what it's come to for the Titans, who haven't registered a sack since the third quarter of the team's win over Indianapolis on Nov. 29. That's more than nine quarters without hauling down an opposing quarterback, the second time this season the Titans have endured a sack drought of at least two full games.
