Game-winning drives? Clutch comebacks? Practice has made perfect for Tannehill, Titans

In addition to poring over Titans game film each week, Mike Vrabel and his coaching staff make a point of analyzing tape from contests all across the league.

They want to spot unique situations and predicaments other teams have found themselves in, the better to replicate those scenarios for the Titans on the practice field. That constantly changing cycle of challenges provides Titans players with new tests every week, forcing them to find quick comfort levels in the most trying of circumstances.

It's a demanding strategy that's paying particular dividends offensively, especially since offensive coordinator Arthur Smith and quarterback Ryan Tannehill joined forces in Week 7 of the 2019 season.

Consider what the Titans have accomplished in the way of coming through in the clutch during that time:

  • Tannehill has guided five game-winning drives in 12 regular-season starts for the Titans, a total that includes a Week One win in Denver and a Week Two victory over Jacksonville in 2020. That total of five game-winning drives – defined by Pro Football Reference as a scoring drive in the fourth quarter or overtime that puts the winning team ahead for the last time – is easily the most of any NFL quarterback with 12 or fewer starts over the past two years. Sam Darnold is next with three, while five other quarterbacks – including Drew Brees . . .
