Jadeveon Clowney’s versatility should thrill Titans, even if Mike Vrabel won’t admit it

Mike Vrabel is not only an NFL head coach but a product of the Bill Belichick system, so if we expected him to jump on board the Jadeveon Clowney hype train Monday – in his first public comments since Clowney arrived – we should have known better.

He meant no disrespect to Clowney, I'm sure, but Vrabel was hardly going to spend 20 minutes extolling the talents of one player on a 53-man roster, especially when that one player didn't spend a single moment sweating through training camp with his new teammates.

So in full wet-blanket, downplay mode, Vrabel delivered a few beauties during his Zoom with media:

  • Asked about his excitement level over adding Clowney, Vrabel said “I'm always excited to coach players that put a lot into it, and play hard, and are engaged, and are good teammates. I love coaching football, I love coaching guys and I'm glad we're back at work today and we'll be on the field.”
  • Asked what Clowney's versatility would bring to the Titans' defense, Vrabel reminded us that “he hasn't even looked at our playbook yet.”
  • And asked about the feasibility of Clowney playing in Monday's season opener in Denver, Vrabel said, “We'll have 53 players on the active roster . . .
