Recap: Nashville SC draw Memphis 901 in final preseason match

NASHVILLE, TN – Nashville SC rounded out their 2024 preseason with a 1-1 draw against USL Championship side Memphis 901 FC at Geodis Park.

The XI

Unsurprisingly, Gary Smith rolled out a first-choice lineup, hinting at his plan for next Thursday’s Concacaf Champions Cup debut against Moca FC.

Dan Lovitz and Walker Zimmerman made their first appearances of preseason in the second half, playing the final 15 minutes after working through injury over the past several weeks. Smith said the hope was for both to be available for selection for the MLS season opener against New York Red Bulls on February 25, hinting at potential competitive games for the pair before hand.

On the pitch

Memphis opened the scoring in the opening minutes, taking the ball from Aníbal Godoy on the top of the box before Luiz Fernando found the back of the net.

Just before halftime, Jacob Shaffelburg earned a penalty. Hany Mukhtar’s initial effort was saved, but the forward tapped home the rebound to equalize.

What it means

Without watching, it’s tough to draw too many conclusions. However, the lineup is notable since Gary Smith had indicated several times that he planned on using this match as a test run for the season opener against Moca.

It’s also notable that Dru Yearwood got the start, seemingly jumping ahead of Sean Davis, at least in the temporary pecking order. Brought in from New York Red Bulls this season, Nashville has placed a lot of weight on Yearwood’s role in the squad in 2024.
