Rodrigo Piñeiro to leave Nashville SC on loan

Rodrigo Piñeiro is set to leave Nashville SC after just one season in Music City. The 22-year-old will join Unión Española in the Chilean top flight on a season long loan, Unión announced on Saturday.

The Uruguayan winger was signed as Nashville’s first U22 Initiative player ahead of the 2021 season, but made just two appearances in gold. Piñeiro struggled to adapt in his first season abroad, and was public about his struggles with mental health and his desire to leave Nashville for a club where he would play regular minutes.

It’s a disappointing return for Nashville, who spent a reported $1.7 million on Piñeiro last January in hopes that he could provide more attacking output from the wings. It remains to be seen if a purchase option is part of the loan, and getting back on the field for a season could eventually set him up for a return to Nashville.

This story will be updated once the move becomes official.
