Scouting the Opponent is a weekly preview series looking ahead to the Titans upcoming matchup.
Division matchups are of the utmost importance. Even when one team appears to be entering a potential rebuilding phase, these can be tough battles.
The Texans fired head coach/general manager Bill O’Brien after their 0-4 start, and Romeo Crennel is now 1-0 as the interim head coach.
The Titans of course are undefeated entering this matchup, looking to establish a firm lead in the AFC South. It’s never easy when these two teams square off, and familiarity between the franchises is at an all-time high after Jadeveon Clowney, Johnathan Joseph, and Anthony Midget joined the Titans organization over the offseason.
We’re starting to get a clearer statistical picture of how teams stack up against each other now that we’re five weeks in. Here’s the statistical preview between these two teams:
|11th||Total Yards Allowed/G||30th|
|23rd||Pass Yards Allowed/G||8th|
|27th||Rush Yards Allowed/G||31st|
|1st (+8)||Turnover Differential||T-28th (-5)|
|13th (46%)||3rd D Conversions||26th (37.7%)|
|10th (39.5)||Penalty Yardage||1st (29.6)|
|16th||Rush DVOA – Offense||20th|
|5th||Pass DVOA – Offense||13th|
|19th||Rush DVOA – Defense||26th|
|11th||Pass DVOA – Defense||12th|
The Texans run defense has been largely atrocious this season, while their pass defense has actually been above average. This could be the week Derrick Henry and the offensive line have been waiting for.
Personnel and Players to Watch
With Crennel now in charge, the following are key personnel members in Houston as well as players to be aware of heading into this game:
- Romeo Crennel made his debut as the interim head coach last week and became the oldest NFL head coach in league history. I can’t imagine Crennel has long-term plans to coach this team given his age, so it will be interesting to see what philosophy he carries throughout the remainder of this season.
