The Chalkboard: Nashville SC 1 – 1 Orlando City

Nashville earned a 1-1 draw against Orlando City on Wednesday, a much improved performance from their 3-1 loss a week prior. Randall Leal finally got off the mark, finding the net in a well worked team move.

The first half, or more specifically the first 35 minutes, were rough for Nashville. Despite pressing effectively, they struggled to retain possession when they won the ball back.

I initially asked Gary Smith post match if he felt his midfield was overrun, and he disagreed with that assessment. After watching the match again, I'd have to agree with him. Nashville did a good job keeping Orlando in front of them, forcing them wide for most of their chance creation. It was with the ball that they struggled.

This is in part due to a strong counter press from Óscar Pareja's side, but it was in part emblematic of Nashville's opening period. Dax McCarty and Aníbal Godoy didn't hit the passes they usually hit, and overall Nashville's entry passes into the final third weren't effective.

It was an interesting conundrum for Nashville. There were still moments where attackers didn't appear to be on the same page, but overall there was more cohesiveness from Nashville. The final execution was just a bit off.
