Nashville SC announced Tuesday that their preseason friendly against Inter Miami, previously scheduled for April 3, has been cancelled. The full club statement reads as follows:
Nashville Soccer Club and Inter Miami CF have announced that, in the interest of the health and safety of the players and staff, the preseason match scheduled to take place on Saturday, April 3 has been cancelled.Â
This is the third consecutive Nashville friendly to be cancelled. Their match against New York Red Bulls was called off after a match official tested positive for Covid-19, and their match against New York City FC three days later was called off. No firm reasoning was given other than a cryptic “in the interest of the health and safety of players and staff.” Several New York reporters later confirmed that the health issues did not come from NYCFC.
Nashville had more than their share of health issues last season, missing the MLS is Back tournament after at least nine of their players tested positive for Covid-19. Whatever the current issues, they haven’t played a preseason match in 11 days, and have just two more contests on the books before the MLS season kicks off. For a team looking to build on a strong 2020 performance, it’s concerning.
