Titans landing Jadeveon Clowney should be a franchise-changing moment

This kind of thing isn't supposed to happen to the Titans.

Securing one of the biggest free agents on the 2020 market, a player who just might – might – be enough to push the team a step or two beyond its AFC runner-up status of last season?

Come on. What's gotten into this franchise, assuming multiple reports that Jadeveon Clowney will sign with the Titans are accurate?


When we look back at the history of the Oilers/Titans, it's so much easier to recall heart-breakers – just-misses or second-bests – than it is epic achievements.

We can start in the previous century if you like, almost half a decade before the franchise even moved to Nashville. Which team in 1993 pulled off the greatest choke job in NFL history? That's right, the Oilers, who blew a 32-point lead to Buffalo in the playoffs, eventually losing 41-38 to the Bills in overtime.

Moving forward, this was the team that finished agonizingly close to sending a Super Bowl to overtime in 2000, when wide receiver Kevin Dyson was stopped – stretching, stretching – a yard short of the end zone as time expired in a 23-16 loss.

Then there was the spring . . .
