Titans must address underrated need at safety in free agency

The Tennessee Titans will enter unrestricted free agency in two weeks time with a sizable need at safety. Much of the offseason discussion has focused around adding offensive linemen and wide receivers, and understandably so, but I also expect general manager Ran Carthon to acquire a starting-caliber safety. The Titans don't possess enough quality or depth at the position, one that's carried a lot of importance and production in new defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson's defenses.

Amani Hooker and Elijah Molden are currently the notable safeties under contract. Hooker is a no-brainer starter, but has also been limited to 34 of 51 regular-season appearances since 2021 due to recurring injuries. Missing 17 games in three seasons qualifies Hooker as injury prone.

Molden is nothing more than a quality rotational contributor as a nickel-safety hybrid. The Titans can't possibly enter the 2024 campaign with Molden as the expected starter opposite Hooker. They also have a pair of in-house depth players that could be re-signed.

K'Von Wallace and Terrell Edmunds were the players tasked with replacing Kevin Byard following his midseason trade. It's worth noting Wallace spent the 2021 and 2022 seasons alongside coach Wilson in Philadelphia. Both Wallace and Edmunds played well in spurts while offering different skill sets and abilities. The Titans should probably re-sign at least one of them, but it shouldn't impact Carthon's line of thinking heading . . .
