A report came out yesterday morning that the Falcons want to move Julio Jones due to salary cap complications. The Titans were listed, almost as an afterthought, in the article as a suitor for the WR. The article said that the Titans are too close to the cap to be seriously interested. This is a huge red flag to me.
I have heard more than once this offseason, from reporters connected to the Titans, that they are too close to the cap to make a serious move for Jones. That might be an issue if the cap was a real thing. However, with a bit of imagination, the Titans could clear over $44M in space if they really wanted to with restructures. They refuse to for reasons unknown.
This should be less of a problem than anytime in the history of the franchise for two reasons. The first is that the salary cap is going to balloon in a year due to TV deals. The second, and more important reason, is that the Titans are in a Super Bowl window now. It doesn’t matter if you save cap space for 2022 or 2023 if you’re not doing everything in your power to win now.
Derrick Henry and Taylor Lewan are on board. JRob, Vrabel, and Amy should be too.
One of the players that should help the Titans win now is Derrick Henry. He won the Tennessean of the Year award from the Tennessee Hall of Fame. Well deserved for reigning rushing champ.
