Why Titans rookie WR Colton Dowell could make immediate impact

Tennessee Titans rookie wide receiver Colton Dowell finds himself in an intriguing position. Rarely do NFL franchises rely on seventh-rounders to contribute immediately, but Dowell may be stepping into a different situation altogether. The Titans have a major need at the position, and general manager Ran Carthon didn't select a receiver before choosing Dowell with the No. 228 overall pick.

Current East Tennessee State wide receivers coach Dallas Dickey coached Dowell at UT-Martin last season via the same coaching role. Dowell is an uber-athletic 6-foot-3, 215 pound physical specimen. Coach Dickey is among Dowell's biggest supporters.

Coach Dickey recently spoke exclusively with Broadway Sports. Dickey discussed what helped set Dowell aside at UT-Martin, his route-running prowess, and more. Coach Dickey believes Dowell can contribute in 2023.

JM: Colton Dowell was healthy in 2022 after suffering an injury in 2021. He exploded for 67 receptions, 1,036 yards and six touchdowns. What do you think clicked for him?

Coach Dickey: Like you said, the ability to stay healthy was big for him. It allowed him to reach his full potential in 2022. He was one of the more experienced receivers in our room. He was basically a sixth-year guy. With his sort of talent, he’s played a lot of football.
