Will the Titans use their franchise tag on David Long Jr. or Nate Davis?

The Tennessee Titans can officially begin using their franchise and transition tags during a 15-day period from Feb. 21 to March 7. Typically speaking, most NFL franchises wait until deadline day to actually utilize the tag. Let's explore the three iterations of the tag.

The exclusive franchise tag is rarely utilized by NFL franchises because it's the most lucrative option. From a beneficial standpoint, it's also the most restrictive tag. Players who receive this tag aren't allowed to negotiate with outside teams. A long-term extension can continue being negotiated between both parties, or the player may opt to play on the one-year contract the tag provides.

The non-exclusive franchise tag is the version that is most commonly used. The non-exclusive tag allows players to welcome offers from other franchises, but gives their existing team who tagged the player the right to either match the offer and keep the player, or receive two first-round selections from the signing team. Typically, the threat of parting with two premium first-round selections keeps potential suitors away, effectively giving the team using the tag an extended exclusive negotiating window. The non-exclusive version of the franchise tag carries a slightly lower salary formula than the exclusive version . . .
