Roster cut-down day is the most stressful 24-hour period in the NFL calendar. It's especially stressful for back-end-roster types. That was the case for Tennessee Titans offensive linemen Xavier Newman-Johnson.
Newman-Johnson entered his second training camp with the Titans earlier this summer. He's all too familiar with the heartbreak cut-down day can mercilessly welcome. Newman-Johnson was waived by the Titans during final roster cuts in 2022.
An undrafted free agent out of Baylor, Newman-Johnson spent the majority of his rookie campaign on Tennessee's practice squad. He was signed to the active roster in late December as the Titans dealt with a slew of injuries. He appeared in one game as a reserve. It offered Newman-Johnson a glimpse into what being on an active 53-man roster feels like.
Newman-Johnson spent his rookie campaign developing behind the scenes, often working with offensive line coach Keith Carter and his assistants, Jason Houghtaling and Mike Sullivan. Carter has since been relieved of his duties, and Houghtaling was promoted to offensive line coach.
Newman-Johnson has a terrific working relationship with Houghtaling and Sullivan, who each work on different aspects of Newman-Johnson's game. He returned to camp as a more complete project with the versatility to confidently play all three interior positions. The Titans noticed his development.
